TATAMIBERI

About Tatami-beri by Takata Orimono

Tatami-beri, tradition and technical
advancement of weaving since 1892.

Tatami-beri (tatami hem) is a hemming material to protect and reinforce the rims of tatami mat.
The hem is indispensable in preventing wear and tear of tatami mat corners and filling the gap between mats.
Its origin dates back to the Nara period, when nobility households and temples used a custom-made special textile to cover the tatami rims.
Today, the material has been changed from cotton to synthetic fibers for its lightness and great color.

In 1892, Takata Orimono was founded in Kojima, a town overlooking Seto Inland Sea

Since its foundation in 1892 in Kojima, a town overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, Takata Orimono has been engaging in innovative challenges in its pursuit of possibilities of tatami-beri while cherishing Japan’s unique tradition and culture.

Add colors to colorless world and brighten up a space.

In olden days, tatami-beri represented certain social ranks by patterns and colors, but there are no such restrictions today. It used to exclusively feature black or brown cotton or linen yarns polished with waxed brush, but today’s hems are mostly made of chemical fibers with a great color variety.

The prowess of MADE IN JAPAN is handed down over generations.

Today, electronic high-speed jacquard needle looms are used to manufacture tatami-beri. While the loom is new, our obsession to texture and love of our tradition remains intact in our daily effort to create new tatami-beri.

rooted in Japanese tradition and culture

In olden days, tatami-beri represented certain social ranks by patterns and colors, but there are no such restrictions today. It used to exclusively feature black or brown cotton or linen yarns polished with waxed brush, but today’s hems are mostly made of chemical fibers with a great color variety. More recent items feature a wider variety of materials, such as yarns made of recycled plastic bottles, as tatami-beri constantly reinvents itself along with the passage of time.

We manufacture about a thousand different types of tatami-beri, ranging from classical to modern designs. Select your own hem designs matching your preference or the use of the room to enjoy a life with tatami in a way you have not enjoyed before. Tatami-beri brightens up not only the room but also the mood of people who spend time on tatami.
